For those that like to barbeque, cook, drink, and boat, I would definitely recommend trying out some homemade wine making.

I started a year ago and we have made 5 batches (Translated - 150 bottles!). It is very easy and a great addition to any great meal, especially those summer cookouts. I buy the premium kits which includes all of the ingredients needed such as the oak, grape skins, juice concentrate, and bottle labels.

I used to make beer and this is a lot easier unless you go crazy and crush your own. This takes it to a different level in terms of keeping it sanitary, filtering, etc.

There are a ton of websites where you can buy the kits ($80-$150) and the supplies (one time ~$150) to get started. Custom labels are available and you can make some pretty cool labels when sharing the wine with friends.

what is the cost per bottle when you're all done? We have talked about doing this several times but never saw the cost analysis.

I made a batch about 10 years ago and it was about $3 per bottle when using a kit. It is way better than 3 buck chuck (Charles Shaw wine) I need to make another batch I've been collecting bottles for 10 years.

To net it out, if you buy the kits and keep it simple and doable, it is about $8/bottle. This doesn't take into account the equipment needed to start ($150). You would not do this necessarily for the cost savings which was my experience with making beer. It is kind of like making your own ribs and cooking. The results are not always cheaper but it can be a lot better since it can not be bought. Good luck

As noted, my experience was a long time ago so prices have probably gone up. My equipment was not factored in but I split the batch with two others and we shared equipment. About 33 bottles for a 6 gallon batch. This was pre kids and it's a hobby I haven't gotten back to post kids.
