Just pulled my pumps to top off the oil in rear bearing housings. I believe that July of 2018 was the last time I had opened up the cones. The bearings look good and feel good. They were installed in 2016 so six years on the bearings and four years since I have topped up the oil.
Both cones had a nice vacuum seal when opening. Both had significantly less oil than I initially put in but the bearings were well coated. There was no sign of water intrusion.
How the gear oil escapes remains a mystery.
I poured out the oil and found it to be a thick slurry with the grease I had packed the bearings in.
This is starboard
This is port
I filled the housings with fresh gear oil then I filled the cone with marine grease. I believe it will mix once the shaft starts spinning.
Pulled pumps, pulled caps, no signs of water intrusion, added a little more oil to starboard.
Port was full.
Both looked like a nice oil/marine grease slurry. No pictures today as I was trying to beat the thunderstorms rolling in. Still haven't figured out where the oil goes.... No moisture in there though.
Added grease to the caps put new Yamaha O-rings in and added a smidge of gasket maker RTV and sealed them up....I couldn't find my tube of black or gray RTV so it was the red transmission stuff I used...so the caps have this red ring at the seam now lol.
gonna to go 24-36 months till next check unless I hear noises (have a complete set of parts(seals/bearing) in the shed for both pumps just in case . Only put like 40 hours on it last year and will probably do the same this summer based on work schedule.
Question for you guys that have rebuilt the pumps before. I just pressed both bearings onto the drive shaft with the outer race spacer. Is the spacer supposed to be a snug fit and not be able to move? My spacer moves side to side and isn’t held between both bearings. Just want to make sure I am doing this correctly

The spacer is supposed to be a snug fit... if you go back to swatski's post 77 https://jetboaters.net/threads/changing-yamaha-jet-boat-pump-duct-housing-bearings-and-switching-to-oil-bath-lubrication.10155/post-496143 it has the images/ detailed instructions from the service manual. although the years are different the procedure is almost identical.
The distance the bearings are pressed (gives measurements in the manual) on the shaft sets the shaft position in the pump for assembly.
for a good understanding of the assy process...... here is the one i learned from put together by someone on the GPR wave runner forums..
