Batteries… Yam 195s

Did you leave it a group 24 cause that’s what was in there?
There’s definitely room for a larger battery in that compartment..
Yes I stayed with the group 24 size, didn't see any reason to go larger.

Again I have had zero issues with the radio running the Odyssey down to the point where the engine would not start.

I do keep the battery on a BatteryMINDer AGM Charger when parked.

Thank you for the info, I am likely going to go the AGM route and just keep the single battery.. I will definitely need an actual charger for that type.. I only have a little 1.5A Schumacher maintainer..

Appreciate everyone’s responses!!
Thinking AGM/single battery, haven’t fully decided yet but once I do I will post a few pics of the setup for the thread! 🤙🏻

Was just delivered, as it looks this sets up on the negative side. I assume wiring from - bus to load minus and then the battery minus to the obvious. I assume since I’m not using the aux or ve connection I can just tuck them away somewhere??

Actually edit, quite a few negatives setup on this and from what I’m seeing everything needs to be after.. I can’t just move all these negatives. Maybe set up another bus bar from the battery?

Any reason why the 500a vs the 300a?
How would one determine one over the other?
I thought I wanted to measure the starter motor amperage.. but I never did it. If I was to do it over I’d still buy the 500, there is no loss of resolution at the higher amperage one.

To monitor the battery I use the AntiGravity Bluetooth Battery Tracker PLUS

So far its provided all the data I was looking for.

The anti gravity battery monitor only monitors voltage, great for a vehicle with no volt meter but our boats connext screen shows voltage.

The only way to know the SOC (state of charge) on a lead acid battery, FLA or AGM using voltage is for the battery to sit completely disconnected for 24 hours.

On a FLA battery, one can check the specific gravity for a quick and accurate way to know the SOC whereas this cannot be done on a AGM battery, so there is no way to check the strength of the electrolyte which is where all the energy comes from.

Since the anti gravity device only monitors voltage, the amperage going from or to the battery is not monitored there is no way that the anti gravity battery monitor can compute the SOC. Whereas the smart shunt will show SOC in real time using amperage, voltage and the puekert effect of a given battery chemistry to determine the SOC, remaining run time and update throughout the day when the engines are run and Ah’s / Wh’s are put back into the battery, alternator performance can be checked accurately as well since you can see in real time how many amps are flowing into the battery, as well as when the onboard charger is plugged in the smart shunt will show how many amps are flowing into the battery and how many Ah’s went into the battery when it was charged. Plus there is another voltage only tap that can be hooked to the start battery to monitor voltage at glance or can be used as a temperature monitor and a 30 day history of charge / discharge as well as lifetime usage and charge cycles.

Quick update, group 31 batteries will not fit in the single compartment already available on the Yamaha 195s. Hoping my measurement is not off but it seems to only allow a battery length of 12” so almost all group 31/27 batteries are no longer usable there. Seems it NEEDS to be a group 24.
Eventually will put an AGM battery in there, either odyssey extreme, x2 or just an interstate platinum. All dual purpose. Leaving the single switch, urgency on that battery replacement will come after I find out all the details on how I currently have my setup, installing this shunt.
Ordered some bus bars to better manage all the connections as well. Planning to hook this up today so hopefully have some pictures posted later on. Going to set it up so there is only 1 connection on each post with 1/0 wire. Including the + for the shunt.

So did a quick search.. the odyssey battery has 63 Ah capacity, price? $413

Interstate flooded 81 ah, price? $159

Save your money and just buy the flooded lead acid battery and get more Ah of capacity.

I actually bought an srm-27 but it’s deep-cycle. That’s where all this started lol…

I thought it can’t be used as a starting battery..
Currently looking at the 24M-AGM-A as its dual purpose and only $100 more. $259
