My marina mandated no more "self fueling" boats.
They sell 87 octane. Across the way has valvtech gas but I don't know if they offer 93 .
So thinking booster additive.
Any suggestions? I don't really want to carry around cases of 8oz bottles .

I've wondered about these octane boosters....has anyone found some that work and is cheap...wondering if it would be cheaper to buy a booster than pay the ridiculous upcharge they have for premium these days!

Julian, you still have a 242X? Why boost above 87? Many buying higher octane are just avoiding ethanol. Not to start a debate, but yours should not really benefit from octane alone. Am I wrong in thinking this?

First thing I’d do is find out if Valvetech has premium. 93 is too much anyway all you need is 91.

I’m assuming you wet slip or slip your boat? Best prices for fuel is a land service station.

Depending on your situation you might just get a five gallon can of 105 or 108 VP fuel and mix it in the correct proportion with 87 to make 91. I mix 85 & 91 to get 86 all the time.

When I wet slipped I would pull the boat out, take it to the station and fuel it up to avoid the +$1 up charge for fuel at the marina. Marina owner didn’t like it but there was nothing saying I couldn’t.

No.

87 and 91 octane fuel have the same btu’s per gallon. The difference between the two fuels is the amount of anti knock, 91 has more anti knock / octane than 87 because it is meant to be used with engines with higher cylinder pressures, like a SVHO engine with its super charger.

Running 91 octane fuel in an engine designed for 87 octane actually decreases performance because the 91 octane burns slower than 87 octane due to the lower cylinder pressure of that engine, ergo, less pressure is produced in the cylinder. Temperature in the cylinder also increases due to the extended burn time, this is slight in this scenario but still happens. One is just paying more money for fuel than needs to.

Running 87 in an engine designed for 91 will cause detonation and damage / destroy that engine.

A cap full or 2 of this stuff because of gas pumps.
Might rev a touch quicker.
Carry it with on multiple day trips.
My Samurai loves this stuff. head gaskets not so much.

Since you’re raising the octane of the fuel, it will burn slower, ergo, the engine will rev slower in a normally aspirated engine that requires 87 octane.

I'm with @Bottom Bracket ,

Last year I was frustrated with finding 91oct for my 255XD and looked into additives and chose Boostane. Used it most of last year and this year. So far and no issues with performance at all. Fill up with the lower octane and use their app for the amount of additive and off I go. I carry several bottles on the boat. Huge savings on a 75gal tank.

I think there is a thread I started last year about this subject if you wanna search for it.

Here it is: Octane booster

Looked at your area and got fuel prices via gas buddy…. Looks like regular / 87 is $2.80 per gallon, so 75 gallons is $210. The same fill up with 91 @$3.50 would be $262. Adding enough boostane to make 87 into 91 would be $21, so it looks like $231 for 75 gallons of boosted 87 to 91, a savings of $31 bucks.. if I did the math correctly. Greater savings if you buy in greater bulk.
