We are coming down to Kure for the week. We have 2 Sea Doo jet skis that we use on a lake but have decided to bring them down with us for the first time. Planning to launch at Federal Point. Give me some advice what to do, what to avoid, etc. We are very experienced lake boaters but obviously this is different. Appreciate any information.

Can’t speak to specifics of the area, but it sounds like you are stating you will be using your PWCs and Trailers in Salt Water vs a fresh water lake.

In preparation, I would suggest the following
  • Spray down your engine compartment (engine, hose clams, electrical connections) with a protective product of your choosing (silicone spray, YamaShield spray, BRP has a version as well), this will help protect against any corrosion
  • Buy some Salt-Away (or the equivalent) and use the mixer to spray down your gear (trailer included) and engine bay (after its cooled) to remove any salt residue. Make sure to also get the bottom of your bunks, where the brackets are to hold them in place. Also rinse off the bottom and rear of your tow vehicle to remove any residue that you may have picked up at the ramp.
  • Follow your standard flushing post your run, but use the salt away for the last 30 seconds or so (I realize Sea Doo’s have a closed loop system)
  • Some suggest rinsing your trailer hubs/springs with a bottle of fresh water after launching (so the salt doesn’t sit on it in the sun all day while you are out)
  • Get familiar with the area via a charting app, so you can identify the channel markers and any areas with shoal.
  • If you plan on stopping at sand bars, have a way to anchor your skis, vs beaching them.
  • If you are adventurous, transverse an inlet, wave jumping can be fun, just make sure all of your gear is secure!
  • Oh not sure if you wear glasses while out on the lake, but salt water spray in the eyes is no fun
Safe travels!
