During the winter the gas strut that supports the long cowling over the dash and storage area on my 165 failed. I replaced it with the same model that was on it (rated at 100lbs). It works just like the previous one did before it failed but it does not hold the cowling open like the gas struts for the engine bay do, it seems to act solely as a lift assist. I'm just curious if that is the same behavior other 165 owners experience?

Not normal. Only older 165 models have that cowling (including mine). Mine lifts and holds completely on its own. But I'm nowhere near my boat and I won't be there for multiple weeks, so I can't check the strut rating. But if I found the right part on the Scarab parts website, it's supposed to be 150lbs of force, not 100.

There are only two gas shocks listed in the parts catalog. The other is definitely for the engine bay. So I'm almost certain this is the right part... The last 3 digits are the force.

Thanks Luc, super helpful as always!
