Keeping mice out of your car / truck engine compartment

My friend over in the PNW has had to have her GMC put on a flat bed twice now due to mice getting up on the engine and chewing through the wires, first time ($1100) it was the passenger side injection harness and this time it was wiring in intake manifold area, $1600.

Anyone out there have some suggestions or solutions how to keep mice / rodents off of the engine?

Hang small net bags with moth balls in spots all around areas they seem to go. Some wiring manufacturers use peanut oil for the wire coating so mice think its tasty

We had an issue in my wife’s jeep grand Cherokee and dealership mentioned gain/bounce dryer sheets. It did the trick for us So now I’ve always placed dryer sheets all over the boat when we winterize, because you just never know.

Strong scents in general seems to help deter rodents and snakes. I've heard mixed results on the dryer sheets, but I've never heard of anything but success with moth balls, and that worked to drive all the snakes from our lake house as well. Sorry neighbors not really

Rodents are often attracted to the vegetable oil used as lubricants during the wire extrusion process. There are a number of products out there and I’ve seen people have success using rodent tape. It’s easiest to apply before installing or reinstalling the harness.

We’ve got some friends with a cabin up in north central Washington in a very rural area (almost zero population) and in the colder months it’s customary to pop and raise the hood to cool down the drivetrain so they don’t want to hide there to begin with. Does it work? They swear by it but I don’t have long term personal data to back it up.

After rewiring my utility trailer TWICE because little ahole mice and chipmunks (and due to the cheap soy-based wire on Amazon kits) I finally found success in keeping them away by spraying all the wire with white lithium grease. Seems to detract them.

That said, mice have been horrible this spring in WI. I've had more signs of mice and rodents in my garage than any other years in the past 18 in our house...

We have our share of critters on the farm...about 10 years ago my wife's auto insurance paid out a $5k claim for the interior of her Subaru Outback. They pretty much replaced the whole interior, from carpet to headliner due to chewing. We think it was a chipmunk, that chewed it's way in thru a plastic panel in a rear wheelwell, because of the size of the terds. Dealer said there was soy in some of the plastic parts.
Drier sheets in the whaler did not work for us, they just shit all over them. Mothballs did work. As by the pic. above, we keep a few traps loaded, just in case.
