Just wanted to share my setup for surfing as I did tons of research on this when I was boat shopping and found ALL examples helpful! Feel free to share your setups for the next guy trying to push a 19' boat to the limits lol.
I purchased a 2021 AR190 and have been surfing on it and really enjoying it! I tow it with my Ford Explorer and it fits diagonal in my standard 19.5ft garage. No storage fees! Anyways... Got the boat to fit my needs of an "all arounder" that's good enough at everything. We surf, wakeboard, ski, tube, or just enjoy the lake.
Anyways, got the surf itch and had to scratch it. Here is my setup...
1. Hydrophase ride steady with Auto Launch - Really have enjoyed how easy this is for a new boater to drive the boat. We found 9.8mph as the current sweet spot. Usually 6.8k RPMs. ~8GPH.
2. Wakebooster - used it a few times, but I think its worth the money.
3. Ballast - I already had "freemotion" bags I got on sale a few years ago when I wakeboarded behind my old Rinker, so I have 4 375 bags and the Sumo pump. These I'm playing around with it everytime we go out, but I get a great pocket for "basic ropeless surfing" all the time. This is my setup.. 1 375 on the transom centered (top step) with a strap around the center that connects to the tow eye to hold it steady. 1 375 under the port side bench (I get this about 90% full I think). 1 375 in the ski locker, and depending on # of people going, I will use a 375 on top of the bench seat on the port side. This would be a 3 man crew (Me and 2 friends). If I had 1 or 2 more friends, I'd likely drop the seat bag and usually have 1 friend or the cooler sit in the bow to help it get on plane.
4. Board - Often I feel like this is overlooked. I have a 2011 Hyperlite Broadcast (5'6") and a 2023 Slingshot Coaster 5.0. I weight 200lb and I'm about 5'11. I've had friends who are taller and heavier (215lb) on the same boards and all go ropeless. (attached photo). The Coaster is my favorite, and the 2023 was only like $300 shipped when I ordered it last month.
So overall - 4 375lb bags (1500 of ballast, where half is centered and half is on surf side), 200lb driver, 200 passenger, and 215 surfer. Not sure if the 650lb custom bag is worth the investment at this point.. I just hate making my guests step over the ballast bag on the transom to get to the water.
