Hi Everyone,

The horn merely squeaks, so I'm looking for an upgrade or replacement. I'm guessing water damage.

Any recommendations on horns?

I'm planning to install this horn for $22

Hello Greg10, Weird that your horn would have given you trouble as it would have only been about 2-years old when you reported your issue here on this forum. I've got a 2010 Yamaha 212X that I recently purchased. I've been quite disappointed with the sound the horn has and am wondering about my options for one that would sound deeper and be taken more seriously on the water (considering it is a 21 footer !) instead of the current meek squeak that comes out of it today. Did you go ahead with your replacement from Amazon ? If so, how did it go (was it an easy install) and how does it sound for you these days ?!

See my recent post. Did the factory install your horn upside-down? Drill a few holes in it, shop vac it out, install it right-side-up and then blow it out by applying 12v to it. Like new!!

Or…spend $22 on a new one and start over with it right-side-up, but I’d drill a few weep holes in it before you install. You might have to file the fiberglass hull opening to flip it.

Just realized I responded to a 10 month old post…..

I looked into a new horn that was different and had a better sound. Couldn’t find one without adding a 18” air horn…but I was tempted.

I was intrigued by the Sea Dog Flush Mount Horn but the reviews I found weren’t the greatest. Most people said install something that is “compliant” and then grab a cheap portable air horn for real situations.

Hmmm.... Firstly, thanks for responding here so quickly (!). I clicked on that link you included, and I see the reviews say it isn't very loud so that would be a no go for me as this would be something I'm striving to improve on not just replace with something that's going to be as quiet (wimpy) as what I've already got ! As you say, the 18" air horn may be the way to go to get a stronger sound. But, that would mean moving the location which gets into running wires into other areas of the boat, and I can't say I'm to that point of 'needing' to perfect this. Based on your advice, I will take a closer look and see if drilling holes in it could improve sound (or maybe there is trapped water within it). My wife would say, Why Bother ! Mine is an older (15-years) 212X and so I was thinking maybe my horn is simply on its last legs and there would be people here who have upgraded from the original that I could learn from. Thanks again, Sastocky !
