I have built a custom boat dash for my Yamaha 232 limited s. Just curious if this is something other people would be interested in buying and what they would be willing to pay for something like this. Also what kind of features they would want it to have.

Love this, been following your progress recently. I'm not in the market for this, but couple of things I'd want if I were: a main screen with music controls, nav map, and tachometers. Also I'd like to see a depth reading on the main screen (up by water temp maybe?).

Looking great man, nice work!

Man, that is sweet - well done!! Now get to work on a replacement for the 12.3" Connext on the newer boats....... 😁😁😁

Assuming this is in emulation mode right now, as the one engine had RPM's in the driveway, while the other had nothing?

How are you getting engine data into it? NMEA info is encrypted. Or are you using analog to digital converters? We talked about those in the NMEA thread a while back.

Looks nice though

Since the tachs are not available anymore for the 15 to 18 240 and 242s you should work on this upgrade for those. Would be worth a lot of money since the tachs and connext is anywhere from 5k to 8k

Just realized not all the pics loaded.

I am plugged in to where the old tachometer is and reading the pulses that come from the engine. It took a little calculating but I was able to figure out that these engines send 2 pulses per revolution. So I just calculate that pulse to give the rpm so it's really just digital to digital conversion lol. The pictures are not in emulation accept for navigation I took off my actual location so everything you see is love data.

As Neutron mentioned, the 12.3's are really expensive to replace and a cheaper third party option would sell well.
Any idea what communication protocol they are using for the connext

Holy Cow that's awesome! Now if someone could figure out a solution for the encryption a whole new world of 3rd party replacement could be born.

When you guys say encrypted what do you mean. Has someone tried to tap into this system before? I'm not to familiar with the connext system as i have an older boat (2009)

@arice3421 maybe my choice of words is not 100% correct, Connext uses some sort of proprietary communication protocol. There have been threads about trying to connect the ECU to an aftermarket screen like outboards can.

Gotcha. It might be possible to use yds diagnostic tool I would be able to reverse engineer this communication. I need to get my hands on a 242.

Meaning exactly that. The Yamaha outboards use the NMEA network to send engine data in a standardized form that your Simrad, Garmin, Lowrance etc head unit can utilize and display. Yamaha encrypts this data on the Waverunner engines but still transmits it over NMEA 2000 network.

So yes, there have been long threads on how to read this proprietary data with no luck at all. It's a bummer, as it would lead to great aftermarket solutions that could help Yamaha get out of this jam they are in with failing screens with no supply.

Are they encrypted or just proprietary? The fusion stereo i have was proprietary and as you can see i was able to reverse engineer that.

Proprietary is still using a standard that is many times shared. As my simrad, sees my fusion and vice versa. But the Yamaha data, I have been told is Encrypted, and the reason nobody has been able to crack it.

I could be very wrong, but I sincerely wish you the best of luck, as there is a need for this product for sure.

I gotcha. Any idea of the threads that have talked about this before. The nmea2000 works by each device broadcasting information. Each device will have a node or source number, a pgn code, and data associated with the pgn code. There are standard pgn codes out there that manufacturers can use which would be able to be seen on any nmea2000 device. Some manufacturers choose to create there own propietary pgn codes as Fusion did with my particular stereo (Some of there stereos are more open to simrad but since garmin now owns it I think they are trying to force people to buy there screens). This is what i mean by propietary it is still a standard nmea2000 message just with there own code. If they encrypt the data behind the pgn code that can only be read by an encryption key on the connext screen this is what i would call encrypted. So i guess my question is has anyone dug that deep to find out if the pgn's are just propietary or if the data itself is encrypted.

Where are you located? Maybe there is someone nearby that you can look at their boat that has a connext. If you were near me, my boat and shop would be at your disposal
