Good question. I have done it both ways and it worked either way. FWIW.

I'm just a newbie here but I feel like it should go under. One thing goes wrong and now you have a bent frame for the bimini.

You would have to ingest the rope in the pump or something like it to accomplish that. Which has been reported. But then you are screwed anyway as it will bend your tower, too.
With the rope going under the bimini, kind of like what you have to do with the 242E/XS, I am just worried sick about any passenger' body parts getting caught in it... I do it with shorter ropes as you tow much closer to the boat which forces more obtuse angle, but it makes me a bit paranoid.
