Hey gang, hoping someone on JB has some experience with bareboat yacht charters. We booked a 44 ft yacht for a week in BVI. The charter company tells us there is insurance on the boat, but we are responsible for deductibles, and damage to prop and rudders. The out of pocket potentially could be more than my Yammi is worth..

They sell additional coverage to fill the gap, but I am searching for insurance I can buy on my own. They want 100 per day for the extra coverage. Seems crazy, but the boat is worth over 1M easily.

Any thoughts or experience on this ?

They should be providing a bareboat agreement which details all of that information in a contract that you both need to sign.

However generally speaking - yes that is correct. It all really depends on the contract but what they are stating is the norm.

The problem lies with you can't prove there isn't damage already to the prop or rudder that they can come back at you with. Not saying they would do this, but it is a possibility.

Normally I would say just change it to a charter from a bareboat but for a week that's not cheap. At $700 full coverage no deductible for a 1mil vessel - I would probably pay it for the piece of mind, especially if you are not familiar with the waters or a vessel of that size. That $700 changes an "oh fuck my trip is ruined" moment into a "oopsie".

Not sure where to look but IIRC try calling Buoy as a start.

Thanks, yes, they have provided all the details, I was just hoping to find some of my own coverage instead of using their gap coverage. They pull the boat after each trip so it can be examined for damage. My brother used the same company 3 times, and he watched as they pulled the boat he was about to charter , and saw where the previous user had mangled the swim platform.
I am definitely getting the extra coverage, but have found none on my own.

Even if you did I’m not sure it would be cheaper. The $5000 U-Haul trailer I’m renting next week is $12 a day for 20k if coverage lol

I agree with @Adrian @ JB Solutions on the subject of responsibility for rudders and prop damage that you do not have the ability to "survey" prior to your charter. It is not like they are going to short haul the boat so you can inspect it first and take pictures. Is this 44'er a SV or a MV? If SV, keels should be looked at too.

I will verify with them the inspection procedure, but as I mentioned , my brother has chartered with them 3 times. They pull the boat after each trip, and video recorded. Its part of the check in and out process. I would worry about them being dishonest if I had no prior knowledge of their business practices. Thanks for the questions. Can't hurt to double check.

Here is a link to the boat.
