I am looking for opinions from those who know engines on the following pictures. A mechanic pulled our engine in June and told us that we needed a whole new engine at $7k. This is the Yamaha MR1 (it only had 215 hrs on it). The mechanic who pulled the engine said that the 1st cylinder was shot due to a fuel injector going bad and flooding the engine with gas. Long story short, he started getting shady and couldn't produce receipts for the new engine he supposedly bought off of eBay. We decided to take our engine elsewhere but he had already pulled ours (after he questioned us why we wanted our old one back and said he needed to pull parts off of it to put onto the supposedly "plug and play" new engine). The new mechanic broke the entire engine down and said that he thought our engine was swapped. He said there was no way that this engine was running fine earlier this year.

The engine ran last year and this January for over an hour in the delta and had no issues. In May it was taken to the bay and after 10 minutes it started to rev up real high. My husband kept on turning the engine back on and off due to the continued revving. He said there was no black smoke or vibrations. He decided to just head back to the dock after it kept occurring and an oil light came on.

What do you guys think? Did we get dooped or could this engine actually be ours?

maybe you could reach out to yamaha and see if they have serial numbers for the boat. That's not a guarantee but could shed some light if that info is available and they do match up . What are the serial numbers because some of the digits in the number have to do with manufacturer date. see how the two compare. The motors for those boats I think were unique In that they only made non ho motors for a few years and the jet ski motors had a few things that made them different. The cylinders in these boats are similar to a brake rotors if the slightest bit of moisture gets on them they oxidize real fast. Even the casting color on the blocks changed yours looks dark grey or black they went natural in the later years. The company SBT may be able to help they are the biggest re manufactured dealer but unfortunately did have lots of complaints but haven't seen any lately and you would probably have to go that route to get that boat running.

This was a motor left out for about 2 months and as or season wraps up a good visual of why fogging oil is important

Look lets be real you bought a boat last year and used it a few times and it had problems. As for what happened to your engine and if that is in fact your engine who knows. You bought a 21 year old boat. Probably for a good price, but who knows if that engine was ever worked on or replaced in thosr 21 years. Its very likely it could have had issues prior and you didn't realize it.
Unfortunately you are in a very crappy situation, and you are looking for some smoking gun to go after the mechanic whom you believe is shady. He may be shady but you have NO way to prove it and all the posts and questions are not going to fix the situation.
You really need to move on with fixing the boat or sell it as is which is probably the better move and move on
 
The engine serials are in labels inside the engine and could be in your title depending on your state.

The real question is, if it was swapped, can you do anything about it at this stage?

Too bad the mechanic was a fraud, but the important thing is what you can do going forward.

I know my insurance on our AR230 before and now 252 required the serial numbers on each engine. Dude just needs to get a lawyer though or consult to see if there is anything he can do. Us keyboard warriors aren’t going to give any sort of expert witness testimony lol.
