Apparently the magic number for my boat is 3.9 quarts using suction at the upper tank. I did dig around and find another dip in the tank the pulled a health amount of oil. I thought 2.5 was the norm? Or was this motor just over filled? I know the other motor is over filled. I have the intake plenum oil to prove it.

I do a drain ...which still doesn't seem to completely empty it out. but I do suction first. I found you can get about 2.5 at the first go. then if you cycle the engine for a few seconds, you'll be able to dig out nearly 3.5 all together. so yeah, 3.9 seems high.

I don't know how you feel about drains, but that is one way to find out if you were over full.

So you are cycling the engine after you have sucked oil out of the engine?

yes. cycling, not running.

Do you just pull the lanyard and turn the key for a few seconds to let it cycle without starting? That wont hurt the ignition system will it?

yes. i'm not sure how it could hurt the ignition system, unless you are thinking it might burn up the starter? i just crank it for 5-10seconds. this will pump the oil out of the case so you can get it out of the oil tank.

At this point, I'm open to doing a complete drain. What is the total capacity?

I should add that the oil was warm but not hot. Ran the motor for about 5 minutes on the hose. Then let sit for 5 minutes.

I normally get 2.75-3. If you put 3.9 quarts back in and it was only touching the dipstick by a small margin on the trailer than you weren't overfilled. If you put 3.9 back in and you were in normal range on dipstick on the trailer than you are overfilled. When I'm a little over 1/8" on dipstick with boat on trailer I'm at upper end of normal warmed up on water. I'm a little conservative going back in with oil and take quart or so with me on the first trip so I can check on water.

The oil level just over the bottom of the dipstick cold (about 82 ambient), warm after idle but 5 minute rest was about 1/4 " over the upper mark, so I was overfilled no doubt. I was mostly level with about. 1-2 degree bias to the rear

Someone refresh my memory...my dealer told me that after running the engine for 5 minutes (with boat level) the oil should read on the min line of the dipstick. He said that if it reads mid-to-high on the dipstick it will get into the air filters when the engines get hot...

My MR1 says if the oil is cold the level will read low. The general rule of thumb is cold in the driveway just at Min. level.

It's always best to check on the water after you let it warm up, then there is no question. Min. at home will keep you safe, overfilling will cause the air cleaners to get filled with oil and they are about $100 each.

EXCELLENT ADVICE !!!!!!!!!!
And the "result" of over-filling and running your boat is ruining $125 (EACH !) air filters !!!!!!!!

Note: Be SAFE & SMART< both. Measure the oil you removed, including what is left over from your oil filter. Don't put back any more than you removed.
Be anal. Be careful. Save money in the long run. All of this takes 10 extra minutes.

Good luck * Best Wishes, Mikey Lulejian - Lake Oconee, GA

Thats it! i new it was something like that...

I always get 3 to 3.5 Liters out of each engine. My boat trailer is jacked up at the front which helps. Cam.

I'm amazed at the different quantities that everyone is getting. I need to check my starboard engine. Hopefully tonight.

KXCam22, my engines were within 2 degrees of level.
Does anyone have a good picture of the back, of the tank that shows shape and depth?

I only get 2.5 quarts out of each engine as well.

@JetPowered Just to make this discussion more interesting, your boat's oil was never changed or topped off by anyone other than the dealer...
